Description & Learning objectives

According to recent statistics, 10-13% of all young people between the ages of 11 and 16 years old are affected by self-harm. The scale of the problem has dramatically grown over the last decade and many professionals feel overwhelmed by the issue. Often, they are unsure about how to effectively react in the case of a disclosure, feeling they know little about the subject and often fearing they will make the issue worse by responding in the wrong way.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  1. To understand what self-harm is
  2. To consider what might cause looked-after children to self-harm
  3. To explore the impact on young people who self-harm
  4. To identify other available, useful, and helpful resources
  5. To find out about alternative coping strategies for young people who self-harm
  6. To gain an understanding of physical, emotional, and psychological indicators of self-harm
  7. To understand how support workers can respond and deal with self-harm during and after episodes of self-harm crisis
